Texas has more deer hunters than any other state, and many enter the field each fall. A successful hunt begins with careful preparation. The trip can be made simpler and more pleasant by being aware of the seasonal dates, selecting the ideal location, and being aware of the services that are offered.
Advance planning helps, especially if you're hunting for the first time or are a newcomer from other states hunting in Texas. When planning your hunting trips in Texas, you should keep in mind your arrival date, hunting place, budget and whether a guide will be required.
What the 2026-27 season outlook means for hunters
Texas is expected to have a strong deer season, with an estimated 5.64 million white-tailed deer. Deer habitats have been improved, and healthy growth has been supported by spring rainfall and good fawn survival over the last three years.
In many areas of Texas, these conditions increase the likelihood that hunters will find deer. Hunting conditions vary by location, so ask your guide whether there are any deer on the property you plan to visit.
Check Texas Parks and Wildlife's most recent hunting season dates, bag restrictions, and license requirements before making travel plans. Planning helps you understand the regulations and prepare for your hunt.
How do you judge an outfitter before you book
Choosing the right outfitter will simplify your hunting experience. However, when evaluating the best Texas hog hunting outfitters, consider factors beyond cost.
Some of the questions that you should ask before hiring an outfitter include:
-
How experienced are they, and can they provide recent reviews or references?
-
Do they have the necessary permission to conduct their hunting activities?
-
What happens in bad weather or if the hog population is low in the region?
-
Do they have written policies on deposits and cancellation terms?
A professional outfitter will answer all your questions. Avoid any outfitter who guarantees you success in your harvest.
What should a complete package include?
Even though hunting packages may look similar, they vary based on what they include. Some include accommodation, food, guide service, blinds, in-area transport, and field dressing. Other packages require an additional payment for a harvesting fee, taxes, a tip, or an overnight stay. Request that the package be described to you in writing before you book a place.
Hog hunting is more flexible than deer hunting because you can hunt hogs year-round on private land in Texas. There is no closed period when hunting is restricted, but please read the most recent laws. Deer hunting also requires more hunting methods than hog hunting does.
Health and safety points every hunter should know
Protecting wildlife health is another part of responsible hunting. Texas Parks and Wildlife advises hunters to watch for New World screwworm symptoms and notify a local wildlife biologist of anything unusual. Additionally, hunters should abide by the most recent Chronic Wasting Disease (CWD) regulations, which include guidelines for handling and discarding deer carcass parts.
Ask your outfitter about the property's health and safety regulations prior to your trip. An experienced outfitter should walk you through the correct steps and advise you on what to do if you see anything unusual.
Plan your next hunt
A few simple steps make up a well-planned hunt. Review the season outlook, choose a region that matches your goals, use the same questions to compare outfitters, and read each package carefully. Add a few safety checks to build a solid foundation for the journey.
When hunters take the time to research Texas deer hunting outfitters, they often find that the right fit makes the experience more enjoyable and less stressful. With a well-planned outing, you can focus on the hunt itself and the time spent outside.
Get in touch with Texas Hunt Ranch to ask about available dates, hunt options, and what each package includes if you're ready to start planning.
